Meet Nikau

Breed: Labrador Retriever

Barking from: Auckland

What's up dog?

Nikau was employed as the official school dog of Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School in 2018 - before we opened in 2019. Nikau was named after the school and took on his new role after being released from the Guide Dog programme due to a medical condition. He works with over 400 children in his role, either providing reading assistance, emotional regulation support or teaching responsibility and empathy with the Dog Squad. He is also key in teaching our migrant community about pet ownership and helping children overcome any fears they may have about dogs. Nikau is by far the most popular member of staff and he is adored by the children, whānau and staff of Te Uho o te Nikau Primary School, attending every day in his school uniform which matches the children. Nikau impacts lives every day and is a beautiful soul, coming to life when children are around. He knows when younger children need his calm love and basks in the attention of the older children who look after him in their Dog Squad roles.

2025 NZ People's Choice Award

We believe no dog should be left behind.

Every dog entered into the competition is automatically in the running for the 2025 People’s Choice Award — and the winner will be decided by you, the public.

This year, we’re giving the aroha back to our communities.

Each year, our campaign is supported by a number of incredible charities across Aotearoa that work tirelessly to improve the lives of dogs and people alike. In 2025, we’re shining a spotlight on these organisations and the vital mahi they do.

As part of the voting process, every voter will have the chance to donate to our amazing mental health or dog-focused charities.

It’s your vote, your voice, and your opportunity to make a difference.
